Traditional agroforestry systems combine trees, crops, and livestock, supporting biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and food production. As climate change and biodiversity loss threaten ecosystem stability, these systems are increasingly recognized for enhancing resilience. This study synthesizes the evolution of research on traditional agroforestry systems and their contribution to climate adaptation and ecosystem resilience.
A systematic review and bibliometric analysis were conducted following PRISMA 2020. Records retrieved from Scopus and Web of Science yielded a dataset of 70 publications (2002–2026). Bibliometric analyses using Bibliometrix explored publication trends and thematic evolution.
Scientific production grew, with an annual growth rate of 4.68% and over 75% of publications concentrated after 2018. The literature shows a shift from agronomic perspectives toward ecosystem-based approaches focused on resilience and climate adaptation. Dominant themes included ecosystem services, biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, and sustainable agroecosystem management. Carbon sequestration, soil conservation, nutrient cycling, ecological facilitation, and food security were identified as key mechanisms supporting ecosystem stability. Highly cited studies highlight the contribution of agroforestry to ecosystem services (Jose, 2009) and climate-resilient agricultural landscapes (Wolz et al., 2018). Although chestnut-related studies were represented, the literature focused on ecosystem functioning, ecosystem services, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience. Overall, traditional agroforestry systems are increasingly recognized as socioecological infrastructures supporting resilience under global environmental change.

Keywords: Traditional agroforestry systems; ecosystem resilience; climate adaptation; biodiversity conservation.
