Description
Accurate measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) are essential for studying ecosystem processes and understanding global environmental change. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with compact gas sensors offer a flexible approach to acquiring spatially distributed CO₂ data. Their use is particularly attractive in areas where conventional monitoring remains difficult or costly. However, the scientific value of UAV-derived observations depends on a clear understanding of measurement uncertainty. This study examines the role of uncertainty in drone-based CO₂ monitoring and its relevance to environmental applications. A UAV platform integrating multiple CO₂ sensors is presented as a basis for further methodological development and field investigations. Particular attention is given to identifying factors that may affect measurement reliability and data interpretation.
The work also outlines a framework for uncertainty assessment in airborne CO₂ measurements. The proposed approach is intended to support future evaluations of data quality, sensor performance, and measurement consistency. By addressing uncertainty during the early stages of system development, the study aims to strengthen confidence in UAV-based observations. The results are expected to support wider use of drone technologies in environmental monitoring, ecosystem research, and global change studies.
