High-throughput plant phenotyping has generated unprecedented volumes of heterogeneous data originating from field platforms, drones, proximal sensors and controlled-environment facilities. While research infrastructures have made remarkable progress in developing standards, data management practices and interoperable digital ecosystems, an important challenge remains: transforming these scientific advances into operational solutions that deliver value to end users.
Drawing on HIPHEN's experience as a European provider of digital phenotyping solutions, this presentation will illustrate how industrial actors can contribute to this transition. Through concrete examples ranging from variety testing and crop monitoring to decision-support tools for breeding and agronomy, we will discuss the importance of integrating high-quality phenotyping data, metadata standards, FAIR principles and scalable analytical pipelines into operational digital ecosystems.
We will also share our perspective on the complementary roles of research infrastructures and industrial partners in accelerating innovation. Research organizations generate scientific knowledge, datasets and methodological advances, while companies play a critical role in industrializing technologies, deploying them at scale and collecting feedback from operational users. Strengthening this continuum is essential for developing robust predictive models, digital twins and next-generation decision-support systems capable of addressing the challenges posed by climate change and sustainable agriculture.
Finally, we will discuss how open standards and interoperable data infrastructures can foster stronger collaboration between academia and industry, ultimately increasing the societal impact of plant and ecosystem research.
