Description

How can scientific understanding of ecosystems help build resilience to climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, and resource pressures - while supporting human well-being and sustainability? Understanding Ecosystem Resilience - What makes an ecosystem resistant or adaptive to disturbances? Identifying tipping points, thresholds, and recovery processes.

Keywords: ecosystem resilience, climate adaptation and mitigation, tipping points

    29/09/2026, 10:15

This talk will briefly introduce some key concepts related to ecosystem resilience and will illustrate on selected examples how ecosystem experiments have advanced our understanding of the mechanisms underlying drought resilience. The talk will end with some broader conclusions and recommendations highlighting the potential and limitations of enhancing ecosystem resilience in a changing world.

Session 1: Ecosystem Resilience in a Changing World
    Oral

The combined impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss are reshaping how ecosystems function, but their interplay remains unclear. One critical gap in our understanding is the role of soil fauna biodiversity in helping ecosystems withstand droughts driven by climate change. To address this, we conducted a three-year ecotron experiment simulating a Mediterranean forest ecosystem. Our goal...
